The Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) men’s basketball team came away with a win and a loss in the Baymont Inn Classic November 18 and 19 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

The Bears opened tournament play with a 110-41 win over County Upper Academy (CUA) on Nov. 18 and then dropped a 72-70 decision to Illinois Valley Community College (IVCC) on Nov. 19 to fall to 4-2 for the season.

Freshman Wali Parks of Iowa City led five players in double figures with 16 points in DMACC’s victory over CUA. Sophomore Brendan Lipovsky of Fairfield, Neb., tallied 15 points in the win, sophomore Nibra White of Evanston, Ill., and freshman Nysir Marshburn of Philadelphia, Penn., scored 13 points apiece and freshman C.J. Payawal of Gurnee, Ill., finished with 11 points.

DMACC made 25 of 38 field goal attempts in the opening half en route to a 59-23 advantage at halftime. The Bears shot 54 percent in the second half as they put the game out of reach by outscoring CUA 51-18, and finished the contest with 48 field goals in 81 attempts for 59 percent. DMACC was 7-of-20 from three-point range and 7-of-13 from the free throw line.

Freshman Malcolm Ruff of Chicago, Ill., grabbed nine rebounds and freshman Adam Shorkey of Story City hauled down six as DMACC came away with a 43-30 advantage on the boards. Freshman Knowledge Darby of Brooklyn, N.Y., and White dished out seven and five assists respectively and Parks topped the Bears in steals with five.

Lipovsky scored a season-high 24 points and Parks added 17 in DMACC’s loss to IVCC. The Bears made just eight of 25 field goal attempts in the first half and trailed at halftime, 43-23. DMACC rallied in the second half and had a one-point advantage with 47 seconds to play before IVCC scored with 31 seconds left to come away with the win.

Parks had 13 rebounds and Darby added 11 to give DMACC a 48-37 advantage on the boards. Knowledge topped the Bears in assists with seven and also led DMACC in steals with four.

The DMACC men’s basketball team will host Little priest Tribal Nov. 22 inside the DMACC gymnasium. Game time is 7 p.m.
